The world-famous bronze sword. once owned by Gou Jian. the King of yue State in the Spring and Autumn Period of ancient China, was excavated and unearthed in December of 1965 from No. 1 Tomb for the aristocrats of Chu State which was located in Wangshan Mountain, Jiangling, Jingzhou City, Hubei Province (approximately 7 Kilometers away from the old site of The Ancient Jinan Town-the capital of Chu State in the Spring and Autumn Period). As one of five outstanding overlord rulers. Gou Jian enjoved a noble prestige. But once he had lost a war against Fu Chai, the king of another state named Wu State. Due to the defeat, Gou Jian bitterly tasted a national humiliation. Nevertheless, Gou Jian did not lose his fighting spirit and faith. On the contrary, he made use of the relentless surroundings to sharpen his will and determination so as to have revenges sooner or later. In order to strengthen his willpower and not to forget the humiliation, Gou Jian slept on the firewood and even he hung a gallbladder over his sleeping place to taste the incredible bitterness. In this way, he at last achieved the success and made his once weak state become a stronger one. The sword mentioned above just Gou Jian's treasure.

The overall length of the matchless sword reaches 55.6cm with its body measuring 45.6cm and its grid being 5.4cm in width. All the body of the sword is covered by shallow rhombic geometric patterns. Both sides of the sword grids are studded with blue colored glaze and turquoise. In the circular hoop of the sword head. there exist 11 rings of concentric circles, which were cast in an extremely exquisite way. Particularly, there are two lines of inscriptions resembling birds'footprints, which are named as bird script letters by historians. To understand the meaning of the inscriptions was a challenging thing, which showed "the sword is exclusively owned and used by King Gou Jian of the yue State".

The imitated swords have already been collected by Chinese National Museum, Chinese Military Museum and The Palace Museum in Beijing respectively in the meantime, the imitated sword gained the recognition from experts and scholars. Especially, the most authoritative antique identification expert and the director of Chinese Committee of Antique Idetification, shi shuqing, appreciated and praised the craftsmanship.
